Local Vaalies Take on the 2014 Cape to Rio Race – A few Vaalies got together over just the past few months and adventurously decided to take on the stormy seas of the Atlantic on the Cape to Rio Yacht Race. The race started on Saturday the 4th January 2014 aboard their vessel “Rocket/Save the Rhino”. They are hoping to sail their monohull vessel toRio in 21 days. No engines are permitted to be used in the race – it all has to be under sail. There were 36 vessels competing in the race and by the second day 10 vessels had already pulled out due to the extreme storms and weather conditions, never before experienced in the history of the race. There were swells of10 meter high waves and many of the vessels experienced critical damage. There were also a number of injuries aboard some of the vessels which tragically included a fatality aboard the Angolan vessel the Bille when the mast broke and hit one of the crew members. The Vaalies have also experienced their fair share of damage to their vessel, but have managed to do running repairs (repairs while still sailing)and are doing really well under the experience of Skipper Gerrie Boshoff, who has amassed over 60 000 nautical miles, which includes:- 9 Atlantic crossings, 1 Circumnavigation and 5 Cape to Rio’s and many others.
